There's a comforting idea floating around that "customers can just tell" when a business is genuine. They can't. Not reliably, and not because customers are careless because the tools they'd need to tell (time, expertise, patience to dig through reviews and fine print) are exactly what a fifteen second buying decision doesn't allow for.

So what fills that gap instead? Proxies. Star ratings that can be gamed. Follower counts that can be bought. Design polish that has nothing to do with actual business practice, a well funded scam can afford a beautiful website; an honest small business often can't.
This is the quiet unfairness at the heart of online trust: the signals customers rely on to judge credibility are only weakly connected to actual credibility. Which means genuinely trustworthy businesses are being judged by a system that wasn't built to detect them.
The fix isn't asking customers to research harder, they won't, and that's a reasonable choice given everything else they're juggling. The fix is giving them a signal that's actually connected to reality: independent verification, checked against a standard, not self reported. It doesn't ask customers to trust more. It gives them something worth trusting in the first place
